Train models, code micro:bits, and unlock the magic of machine learning.
The new AI lab starts with an interactive series of workshops for young minds aged 9–13 years old.
In this hands-on workshop series, children will take their first steps into the world of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and explore how machines learn.
Through engaging activities, children will gain a basic understanding of Machine Learning (ML) and train a real model how to recognise patterns – just like humans do!
What the children will learn:
- The fundamentals of machine learning
- What an AI model is and how it works
- How to train a model with data
- Hands-on coding with micro:bit
- Critical thinking and problem-solving
- Collaboration and teamwork

Two workshops over two months where children will learn about AI. Your child is welcome to join both or one of the workshops.
Workshop 1: Build a smart face detector
This is an opportunity for children to learn how a face recognition system works.
In this interactive 2.5 hour workshop, the children will use a small face recognition model paired with a camera. They will collect training data from picture cards to help the AI system ‘learn’ to distinguish between different faces.
The children will explore how the AI system makes decisions based on the data it has been trained on.
The children will connect and program a micro:bit to work with the face recognition system – and test whether the AI has learned to recognise faces.
This workshop takes place on Saturday 17th May 2025.
Workshop 2: Train the micro:bit to play!
In the second workshop, children will use the micro:bit built-in accelerometer to recognise movement patterns .
Through a fun and interactive Rock, Paper, Scissors game, the children will ‘train’ the micro:bit to identify different hand gestures by collecting movement data and using it to recognise patterns.
The children will test that the micro:bit has learn the rock, paper, scissors game!
This workshop takes place on Saturday 21st June 2025.
The cost for each workshop is £60
